Repair Carpet or Replace It?

Carpet problems come in three piles: it is dirty, it is loose, or it is damaged. Cleaning is one job. Stretching or patching is another. Replacement is the third. Mixing them up is how a “repair” looks worse in a month.

When a repair is the right call

If the backing is still sound and the carpet came loose or was never stretched well, a restretch can put it back. Proper stretch-in and restretch work uses a power stretcher. A knee-kicker alone is not a substitute. Restretching one room and leaving an adjoining hall loose can let wrinkles come back.

A defined wound

Burns, pet-chewed corners, a seam that opened, or a small stain that will not release can sometimes be cut out and patched. That only works with a matching donor — a remnant, a closet, or a hidden piece — and with pile direction and pattern lined up. A patch in the middle of the main path is more likely to read as a patch.

Tack strip and transitions

Pins that no longer hold, a broken strip, or a chewed transition can be local repairs. They will not fix a carpet whose backing is delaminating across the room.

When replacement is the honest job

• Wear is throughout the field, not in one corner.
• The secondary backing may have let go. A spongy feel or wrinkles that return after a stretch may indicate backing failure or delamination.
• There is no matching donor, and a patch would be a different dye lot in a traffic lane.
• Pad is collapsed, wet, or crumbling. New carpet over failed pad is a short delay, not a fix.
• Subfloor moisture or damage has to be handled before any textile goes back down.

Cleaning still has a place on a carpet you are keeping. It is not a substitute for a stretch or a patch, and it will not resurrect a worn-out install. Rental units often mix these lines on one turnover quote.

What we need to quote
