When Does a Restaurant Exhaust Fan Need a Hinge Kit?

A rooftop upblast fan that cannot be opened is a cleaning problem waiting for a name. The name is usually “hinge kit.”

This page explains what that hardware is for and when it is worth quoting. It is not a code inspection, and installing a kit does not make a kitchen “certified.” Fire-system, electrical, and roofing work stay with those trades. What Wilke quotes as hinge-kit and containment work is access hardware on the exhaust fan — not fire-suppression service.

What a hinge kit is for

Fan manufacturers sell hinge kits so the fan can tilt at the curb. The point is access: the wheel and the top of the duct can be reached for inspection and cleaning without lifting the whole fan off the roof. Greenheck’s product copy says exactly that — hinge at the curb cap, get to the wheel and ductwork.

Without a usable hinge or other appropriate access, a crew may be left with poor options: leave the interior uncleaned, or unbolt a heavy, greasy housing and set it on the roof. The first leaves grease in the system. The second is hard on people, the fan, the curb, and the roof membrane. Not every fan without a factory hinge kit needs one; other access can be adequate.

Signs the fan probably needs one

• If the fan has no usable hinge or other appropriate access, reaching the fan wheel and duct inlet may require lifting/removing the fan or correcting the access problem.
• Past cleanings never mention the wheel or the duct inlet — only the hood you can see from the floor.
• There is no hold-open retainer, so even a hinged fan will not stay safely open.
• Grease containment under the fan may be missing, crushed, or overflowing. That is a separate condition from whether the fan opens.

Insufficient safe movement in the power cable or conduit can also keep a fan from tilting. Any electrical modification remains separate electrical work, outside Wilke’s quoted hinge-kit work, unless appropriate capability is established. A hinge kit does not correct an electrical deficiency.

Those are field observations, not a pass/fail from an authority having jurisdiction. The locally adopted edition of NFPA 96 is the document inspectors typically use for commercial cooking ventilation. Whether this fan meets that edition is their call, not a stamp we put on a quote.

What we will and will not quote

We quote fan hinge kits, heavier-duty kits where the fan needs them, safety cables, grease-containment pads, baffle-filter replacement, and similar non-fire-system access hardware — often with the exhaust cleaning so the next visit can actually finish the path. If the fan cannot be opened, the cleaning notes should say which sections were reached. That is more useful to a manager than a sticker that implies the whole system is done.
